Friends of Jennifer Aniston says that the break-up between the actress and Vince Vaughn has been downgraded to a “break.” (Hello, Ross and Rachel!)

Though the couple have not been spotted together for seven weeks, and have not visited each other once while Vaughn has been fillming his comedy Fred Claus in London, insiders tell Us that Aniston, 37, is intent on making it work with Vaughn, 36.

“They aren’t broken up,” says one confidant who previously confirmed the split. “They took a month off as a cooling off period.” (Aniston’s rep, Stephen Huvane, declined to comment.)

For now, however, the engagement appears to be on hold. A close source says that, while Vaughn has not yet returned the engagement ring – a $500,000 9.5-carat canary diamond from jeweler Suzy Fabrikant – “someone from Vince’s camp did call the jeweler a few weeks back, asking if the ring could be exchanged for another or returned.”

Aniston herself returned Monday to The Oprah Winfrey Show –where she had appeared in September 2005 to deny a People magazine report that she and Vaughn were a couple (she labeled the publication “a tabloid…you can’t believe”)–to deny reports of a split. After Winfrey posed the question of a break-up, Aniston paused and stated, “No, no.”
