The Megan Mullally Show Has Been Canceled

The Megan Mullally ShowKaren Walker wouldn’t stand for this, but Megan Mullally doesn’t really have a choice.

The former Will & Grace star’s freshman talk show became the first syndication casualty of the new season, with NBC Universal announcing Wednesday that The Megan Mullally Show has been canceled.

Production has been shut down and a combination of new and repeat episodes will continue to air only until the end of this month, according to Television Week, which first reported the move.

The midday chat fest had been tied for last place in the ratings among syndicated talk shows, attracting a little more than 1 million viewers a day, as opposed to daytime queen Oprah Winfrey, who averages 8 million.

“I am extremely proud of the show we created and am thankful for the passion and tireless efforts of [executive producer] Corin Nelson and the entire staff,” Mullally said in a statement issued by NBCU.

“We are very proud of the hard work and effort that our staff put into the production of this show,” the studio added. “And our host, Megan Mullally, is truly one of the most talented people in our business. We are grateful to have partnered with her on the show and are appreciative for her tireless commitment, effort and dedication to this endeavor.”

No word yet on what will fill the hole in the programming lineup created by the show’s exit.

Mullally, who lends her voice to the upcoming animated film Bee Movie, won two Emmys for playing the pill-popping, squeaky-voiced socialite Karen Walker on NBC’s Will & Grace, which wrapped up its eight-season run last spring.

Perhaps viewers were disappointed to see Mullally playing it straight for a change as she interviewed celebrity guests and engaged in the usual daytime shtick.

But, then again, it’s a dog-eat-dog world out there in syndication.

Food Network personality Rachael Ray’s eponymous new show is doing the best out of all first-run syndicated series this season, scoring the most-watched debut week since Dr. Phil premiered in 2002 and edging ahead of The Ellen DeGeneres Show in the ratings this fall.

And that’s with just about 2.9 million viewers on board.
