The son of hip-hop producer Dr. Dre died over the weekend, the music star’s rep confirmed.
Andre Young Jr., 20, was discovered “unresponsive” by his mother at his home in Woodland Hills, Calif., on Saturday morning, according to the L.A. County Coroner’s office.
“Dr. Dre is mourning the loss of his son,” his rep Lori Earl says in a statement. “Please respect his family’s grief and privacy at this time.”
When Bernie Mac was admitted last month into a Chicago hospital with a fever and trouble breathing, his wife, Rhonda, thought he’d get treatment and would be home in a week. But after no signs of improvement, she faced her biggest fear.
“He didn’t look good to me and I knew this could be it,” Rhonda, his wife of 30 years, says.
The 50-year-old comedian – who suffered from sarcoidosis, an immune system disorder that can affect the lungs – died Aug. 9 of complications due to pneumonia.
Soul music pioneer Isaac Hayes – whose 1971 “Theme from Shaft” won the Oscar and Grammys – died Sunday in Memphis, where he lived. He was 65.
A releative discovered an unresponsive Hayes near an exercise machine in their home at midday, and Hayes was pronounced dead at 2:10 p.m. when he arrived at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said.
Bernie Mac, who for the past 30 years made the public laugh with an over-sized comic persona in film, television and comedy clubs, has died of pneumonia. He was 50.
“[He] passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital,” his rep, Danica Smith, said. “No other details are available at this time. We ask that his family’s privacy continues to be respected.”
Estelle Getty, who won an Emmy and a Golden Globe as the tart-tongued Sophia Petrillo – mother of Bea Arthur’s character – on TV’s The Golden Girls, has died. She was 84.
Getty’s longtime manager, Alan Siegel, said on Tuesday: “As of 5:35 this morning, surrounded by her family in her Hollywood Hills home, Estelle Getty passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes. Her family and close friends thank everyone for being so loving and supportive of Estelle in her last few years.”
Former White House press secretary Tony Snow died Saturday after a second battle with cancer. He was 53.
“The Snow family has lost a beloved husband and father. And America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character,” President Bush said Saturday in a statement. “It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day.”
Christina Applegate’s ex-boyfriend Lee Grivas, 26, was found dead from an apparent drug overdose in his Hollywood apartment on Tuesday.
“Grivas did have a history of drug abuse, and our investigator found a syringe at the scene,” said Lt. Fred Corral of the L.A. Department of Coroner. “But we’re not making any preliminary conclusions until a toxicology report is completed.”
Tim Russert, host of Meet the Press and Washington bureau chief of NBC, died of a coronary embolism at age 58, NBC confirmed.
“It is my sad duty to report this afternoon that my friend and colleague Tim Russert … collapsed and died while at work in the NBC news bureau in Washington, D.C.,” Tom Brokaw said on an NBC bulletin Friday. “This news division will not be the same without his strong, clear voice.”
