Box Office: "Madagascar 3" Steals Top Spot from "Prometheus"
Making for a big weekend of movie money-making, "Prometheus" stormed out to the early lead at the box office to begin the weekend on June 8-10, 2012.
The Ridley Scott directed film starring Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender conjured up a solid $21.4 million opening day while simmering down with a $16.4 million Saturday to make for second place worthy total first weekend of $49.5 million.
With another newcomer doing quite well for itself, the DreamWorks animated sequel "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" nabbed a runner-up earning $20.4 million on Friday while bolstered to the pole position with $22 million on Saturday en route to a box office winning $59.6 million total.
Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated totals are last weekend's top grossing motion picture "Snow White and the Huntsman" ($22.9 million), followed by the Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones starring "Men In Black III" ($14.2 million) and the Joss Whedon directed superhero blockbuster "The Avengers" starring Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth ($11.2 million).
